MIT team peddles more power per pedal - The Boston Globe

This prototype will be available, apparently, within a year. The wheel is designed to be zero-emissions and fit any bicycle. It is expected to run about $500.

The wheel also communicates with a smartphone, forwarding info about road conditions and exertion, among other things. It also functions as a GPS.

Will this help replace automobiles with a more energy-efficient form of transportation? For bikers who are reluctant to ride because of hilly terrain and long distance fatigue, this may be the answer.

Since that ride, the Pan-Massachusetts Challenge has exploded, becoming one of the nation’s largest and most recognized athletic fund-raisers, with more than 5,000 riders and generating a staggering $35 million for cancer research in 2008.

This year for the first time ever. fundraising was not able to cap the year before.
